Gamification for Science and Mathematics Courses (Principal investigator)

I worked with a team and the Technology-Enriched Learning Initiative (TeLi) to develop a user-friendly, interactive online game for a number of science and mathematics courses, including SCNC1111. This game allowed our students to apply their knowledge to real life scenarios in an enjoyable way. While the game started with some preset question banks, students had the chance to design their own questions. With this game, our students benefited from synthesizing their knowledge in the mode of active learning. Since students worked in groups in the game, it naturally served as a platform to foster students’ collaborative learning. Students’ usage and performance were tracked, allowing timely feedback to be given and suitable adjustment to the course be made. The project was favourably received, and the TLQC designated reviewer affirmed that it is “a remarkable achievement to have designed and built this elaborate app.” The reviewer also saw great potential of the gamification platform being extended to, and be a model for, other non-science courses.

Promoting STEM Education in Science using Arduino

Our current science syllabus has yet to nurture the skill of applying science into our daily activities. With the development of today’s technologies, such a simple yet impactful skill can be obtained with ease: Arduino is one of the solutions to answer this need. Arduino provides open-source software and hardware which is suitable for us in applying science to our everyday needs. In this project, we explored the possibility of using Arduino to make 3D printers. 3D printers are a good testbed for Arduino because they allow us to have hands-on experience in using computer programs for controlling hardware parts. 3D printers, moreover, can open up further opportunities for making other tailor-made parts, such as those needed to make another 3D printer

An E-learning Calculus platform for the first year Science students

In the past, additional tutorials were held for students less prepared in calculus. Conducting these additional tutorials, however, was not very effective since not every student could attend due to scheduling conflicts, and students who managed to attend still had different mathematics background. As a result, the diverse individual learning needs continue to be an issue to be addressed during these tutorials.
​
To tackle such problem, an e-learning platform was developed with which students can learn calculus online through instructional videos that cover topics of functions, limits, differentiation, integration and ordinary differential equations. The e-learning platform was hoping to provide round-the-clock assistance to students, who can then easily check their prior understanding and progress. Students can also use this system to work on quizzes and exercises as well as receiving instant feedback. A very powerful feature of such an e-learning platform is that all activities are documented, making it possible to track and analyse students’ learning. This e-learning platform was later transformed into a mobile app HKU Calculus. Their effectiveness is supported by our recent research findings through learning analytics, which were presented in an international conference, as well as published as a book chapter in a proceeding by Springer.
